Kanpur has a rich cultural heritage. The co-existence of many diversified groups in Kanpur speaks volume about the secular nature of the city. Kanpur Revolution:The first Indian rebellion against the British started in Kanpur in the year 1857. This is also called the first war of Independence. The association of different people against a foreign company demonstrated the independent culture of kanpurians.Hindu Mythology:The two places in Kanpur viz., the Bithoor and Jajmau have legendary connection and have been associated with Hindu mythology in one way or the other. While Bithoor has the distinction of having Lord Brahma to do ashwametha yaga, the Jajmau has the reputation of having Yayathi, the eighth successor to Lord Brahma, as its king. More over the great poet Valmiki is supposed to have written Ramayana here and Maa Seetha spent her exile period here and delivered Luv and Kush.The Kanpur memorial church:The Kanpur memorial church or all soul’s cathedral was built in memory of the soldiers who lost their life in the fight against Revolutionists. Though built in memory of soldiers, the church is one of the important worshipping places for the Christians in Kanpur.Literary personalities:The literary personalities of Kanpur include Balakrishna Sharma Aka (Navin), GopalDas (Neeraj), Shyam Lal Gupta etc., Among the Hindi literatteurs Acharya Mahavir Parasad Dwivedi, Ganesh shankar Vidyarthi, Pratap Narain Mishra are very famous. Chandrasekar Azad is one of true patriot in the British period and who shot himself dead when surrounded by British soldiers. Kanpur’s cultural diversity has contributed for the development of the town in one way or the other. |
